I have not updated in a long time because of my busy day job which runs from August-Early June, so I barely get time to post because I spend all my extra time making work. Anyway, this past July, my work Threaded Together‘s documentation photos were exhibited in the group show Widening the Cycle, which was curated by Jen Lewis. The show was held at Suffolk University in Boston, MA. Jen did an amazing job putting everything together and although I was unable to attend, I was informed it went very well! The exhibition was about social justice surrounding women’s menstruation and reproductive health, a great theme and just absolutely relevant to what we, as women have been working towards in the U.S. to protect our reproductive rights and to eliminate the stigma around women’s bodies.

You can check out the exhibition website, www.wideningthecycle.com and you can buy the book at: http://www.blurb.com/b/6289744-widening-the-cycle-a-menstrual-cycle-reproductive Both hard copies and soft are avaliable.

Also, I have completely redesigned my website, so go check out how pretty it is now that it’s all in HTML5! www.johannafalzone.com

Finally, below are the three latest paintings I have completed in 2015! It’s a slow process, because even though it’s summer, I am still very busy with other obligations. I am going to be shooting reference photos for my next round of paintings which is an entirely new concept. Think Beauty and think Stereotypes. When the first painting is done that will officially reveal the theme, but I will not give away anymore details (surprises are good). I will also be taking new, I guess you could call them publicity photos. Basically just photos of me trying to look cool to display on my website and social media pages. I have an “updated” look (new glasses) and my current image is about a year old, so I need to update it if I’m updating everything else to look new and awesome! 🙂

So my website is finally online for all to see the link is: www.johannafalzone.com

Also I have included some photos from the Motel Installation at the Howard Johnson where I installed thread and stitched Maxi Pads and Tampons in the trash can extending onto the toilet to represent the one thing that connects women together. Select images of my book, “Caroline Carver” for the Natural History of the Senses Installation are on here of which is based on the chapter Synesthesia in the subsection about the Muse of which the main woman in this book served as my muse to create the fantastical narrative that does not technically exist, but does.

So I have been non-stop painting/bookmaking etc. Screenplays yup, a lot.

Anyway so this first Friday is the Downtown Peepholes, mine will be at Bon Ami Confections, so you better be there to peek inside.

So far I am currently working on two paintings and getting ready to shoot four more photos for the last four paintings that go with my latest collection for BFA. I am also working on books for installation other than the peephole which is finished, just needs to be installed. The two books I am currently constructing are for a group installation and a solo one. The group one is a leather bound book that will feature photos I purchased from an antique shop to recreate the main woman’s story, it goes along with the theme of the Muse of which this woman is. The second book is a literature based installation where I have constructed an altered book out of the Bell Jar and viewers will be able to interact with the book by pulling out poems by Plath and myself. This is the second interactive book I have made, its nice to be able to invite the viewer although I still fear sticky dirty hands touching my art.

Other projects I have been working on are figure painting and screenwriting. This is the first time I have ever written screenplays and its so much fun, I knew when I wasn’t really making the A mark in Video Art that I was a “filmmaker” rather than a “video artist” although I consider the two the same thing, but some people do not… Anyway I had a feeling taking screenwriting would open the right doors for what I wanted to do with film, so I’m glad its working out! I’ve been writing about my cyclops’ so its great to give them a greater purpose than just being still images on a page, there is now a story and dialogue for them which expands their meaning farther creating an even more meaningful narrative for them.

So I have finished all four Plath paintings. I will say I am overly ambitiously considering adding more paintings to this collection… Anyway, the first painting “Sylvia Plath Smith College Year Book Picture” was a rare find as I stated earlier, and how I found this image was through ta-da, Ebay. Someone was selling a Smith College Yearbook and Plath’s picture was obviously the reason for selling it, me and my amazing print-screen button was able to copy the picture and store it for my forever viewing pleasure and art purposes. This remains my absolute favorite photo of Plath, she never looked so bright and cheery. The other three photos are studio portraits copied from the book “The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath” of which I have been reading all summer except “Sylvia Plath Clear Studio Portrait” that image came from The Google. The Trio of Plath paintings I decided to paint from Clear to Blurry to show Plath’s mental state transitioning from clear to jumbled, happy to sad, etc etc etc. So I hope you enjoy the paintings, this is last paintings until I get back the institution, so there may be more of these in the coming weeks, there may not be, who knows…
